WARWICK, Rhode Island -- When the Warwick Neck Elementary School fire alarm unexpectedly sounded on Thursday morning, June 12th, Catherine "Cathy" Maguire suspected it was just another drill -- the final one in her 32 years at Warwick Neck before retiring next week. The school's Principal, Frank Galligan, had alerted the staff in a faculty memo a few weeks ago that one more drill was still needed for the year. What Maguire didn't realize, however, was that this final drill was also being used as a method to get her outside for a surprise dedication of the school's community garden in her name.
In an area flanked by balloons, along with current and former students, colleagues, local officials, friends, and her family, Maguire was led over to the garden by Galligan and the school's nurse, Joanne Pfeiler. "Warwick Neck School, and the city of Warwick in general, are better places because of educators like Mrs. Maguire" Galligan remarked during the dedication. "We were fortunate to have her skills, passion, dedication, and love for learning over four shining decades."
Hailey Hayes, a former student, remarked how Maguire was her "favorite teacher" that left a lasting impression on not only her, but her sister and friends. "I and others have so many great memories of our time in Mrs. Maguire's classes" she said. Anne Goldman, a representative from the Volunteers of Warwick Schools (VOWS), noted that Maguire was an advocate for all of the positive programs that VOWS brings into Warwick Schools. "Mrs. Maguire was always the first to sign up because she believed in what we did" said Goldman.
Following the brief remarks, former students of Maguire then unveiled the garden's new sign: "Kindness grows in Mrs. Maguire's Garden" which will serve as a reminder of Maguire's constant promotion of good deeds. Colorfully painted 'kindness' stones were then laid by students, in addition to the presentation of gifts and flowers to the educator. The staff felt it was fitting to dedicate the community garden to Mrs. Maguire since she is an advocate for community-building and kindness. "The garden's used by everyone" said Galligan, "so this seemed perfect for her."
During the closing portion, Warwick School Committee Chairman, Shaun Galligan, noted how this current week was "monumental" for Warwick with the groundbreaking for two new high schools that Warwick Neck students will enjoy in the coming years. "It's also a monumental and remarkable week because we're celebrating the wonderful career and dedication of educators like Mrs. Maguire" Galligan said, while also joking he'd never attended a dedication during a school fire drill before.
It was then that Maguire expressed her gratitude. "I can't thank you enough. It's very bittersweet to leave, but I am not going anywhere. I will be back to volunteer. I will not disappear from the school since its been my home for 32 years. I love you all" Maguire said, as she concluded the ceremony with hugs to colleagues, students, and her family who were present for the occasion.
